What is an Impact Crusher?

An impact crusher is a machine used in the mining, construction, and recycling industries to break down materials such as rock, concrete, and asphalt into smaller, uniform pieces. Unlike other crushers that rely mainly on compression, an impact crusher uses high-speed impact force to reduce the size of materials. This makes it especially effective for producing consistent, cubical-shaped aggregates required in road building, concrete production, and other industrial applications.

How Does an Impact Crusher Work?

The working principle of an impact crusher involves the following process:

  1. Feeding – Large pieces of material are fed into the crusher through a hopper.

  2. Impact Force – Inside the crusher, rapidly rotating blow bars strike the material with high velocity.

  3. Breaking Down – The impact force shatters the material against breaker plates (also known as aprons) located inside the chamber.

  4. Sizing – The crushed material is reduced to the desired size before being discharged through the bottom opening.

This method of crushing not only reduces material size but also improves particle shape compared to traditional crushers.

Types of Impact Crushers

There are two main types of impact crushers:

  • Horizontal Shaft Impact Crushers (HSI) – These crushers use a horizontal shaft and blow bars to crush materials. They are versatile and commonly used in quarrying, mining, and recycling.

  • Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers (VSI) – These crushers use a vertical shaft and a high-speed rotor to throw materials against an anvil or rock lining. They are mainly used for producing fine, high-quality aggregates in the construction and asphalt industries.

While both machines are designed for crushing, they operate differently and are used in different scenarios:

  • Crushing Method – Jaw crushers use compression to break down materials, while impact crushers rely on impact force.

  • Output Shape – Impact crushers produce more cubical and uniform aggregates, whereas jaw crushers often produce flatter and elongated pieces.

  • Material Suitability – Jaw crushers are better for hard and abrasive materials, while impact crushers are ideal for softer to medium-hard materials like limestone, concrete, or asphalt.

  • Applications – Jaw crushers are often used as primary crushers, while impact crushers are typically used as secondary or tertiary crushers for refining material.
